Yet, it\u2019s only been 6 years since \u201cexplainer video\u201d as we know it came into being.<\/p>\n<div class=\"seperate\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>But have you ever wondered where it all began?<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>We did some research. Coupled it up with a few trips back in time. Here\u2019s what see what we found:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/history-of-explainer-videos.png\" alt=\"History of Explainer Videos Infographic\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The coming of Explainer videos was a natural progression. Just when PowerPoint was turning out to be the ultimate \u201cexplaining\u201d tool, Youtube was launched. People had found a simpler format. They preferred watching a one minute video rather than reading a document. <strong> This paved way for many \u201chow-to\u201d and \u201cwhat-is\u201d videos which explained concepts in a simple manner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"seperate\"><\/div>\n<p>Common Craft was leading the way in making such videos. They hit gold when they made a video explaining how Twitter works. It was so good that Twitter posted it in their homepage!<\/p>\n<div class=\"img-center\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/common-craft.png\" alt=\"twitter common craft\" style=\"width: 75%\">\n<\/div>\n<p>That\u2019s right, the first explainer video in the world was a gift! Over 10 million people saw this video. <strong>Yet, the term \u201cExplainer video\u201d had not been coined yet.<\/strong> It took another one and a half years.<\/p>\n<div class=\"seperate\"><\/div>\n<p>On Nov 16, 2009, Common Craft helped Dropbox, a small startup to come up with their own explainer video:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w4eTR7tci6A\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It quickly propelled their growth to 10 million users and 50 millions dollars in revenue. <\/p>\n<div class=\"seperate\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>This is the moment in History, when it really shook the world.<\/strong> The term \u201cexplainer video\u201d buzzed in every marketers mouth. It wasn\u2019t just a small trend anymore, <strong>it suddenly became a prerequisite for any business. <\/strong>Just like the internet boom resulted in all companies having a website, the video boom had struck!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animaker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Trends.png\" alt=\"explainer video trends\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Soon, companies like LinkedIN and Quora came up with their own explainer videos.<br \/>\n<strong>The story obviously doesn\u2019t end there. The first animated explainer video was made by Groupon<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LrLmiYHTd8k\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It was a perfect kill. The video became viral and acted as the launchpad to make Groupon the billion dollar company it is today.  What is interesting is that it took 46 explainer-like videos before we found the clone of our modern day Explainer video (Groupon- How it works). <\/p>\n<h2>So has anything changed?<\/h2>\n<p>Initially, a video was made by first shooting the video and then dubbing the voice over based on it. But as explainer videos evolved, <strong>the whole process changed.<\/strong> Now, every explainer video starts with a strong script. Why?<\/p>\n<div class=\"seperate\"><\/div>\n<p>The emphasis these days has shifted to the \u201ccore message\u201d rather than visuals. Marketers have realised that flashy visuals with no story won\u2019t add much value to their brand. <\/p>\n<h2>The takeaway<\/h2>\n<p>So what can we learn from brands like Groupon and Dropbox? <\/p>\n<div class=\"seperate\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Vision combined with speed is a cocktail for unprecedented growth. Vision &#8211; to have the eye to detect trends early on; and speed &#8211; to implement before everyone else wakes up to it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"seperate\"><\/div>\n<p>There is <strong>one more secret ingredient<\/strong> which can catalyse your efforts: <strong>Innovation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"seperate\"><\/div>\n<p>Groupon used animations in explainer videos which was never done before. It became an instant hit. They literally changed the course of how explainer videos would be made from then on. This is exactly what you need to do.<\/p>\n<div class=\"seperate\"><\/div>\n<p>So what could be the future of Animated explainer videos? Is it too late to catch the Explainer video train now?<\/p>\n<p>Not really! <strong>The explainer video trend is still very much alive.<\/strong> <strong>It\u2019s just going to evolve. And you can leverage that!<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"seperate\"><\/div>\n<p>So here&#8217;s Animaker&#8217;s prediction for the future of Explainer videos.<\/p>\n<h3>Virtual reality: the future of Explainer Videos<\/h3>\n<p>Wall Street Journal had called <strong>branded content and virtual reality as the most shiniest objects in Marketing <\/strong>in the year 2016.  Facebook\u2019s Oculus Rift, Sony Playstation VR, and HTC\u2019s Vive are using virtual reality for two things: experience and engagement. <\/p>\n<div class=\"seperate\"><\/div>\n<p>Here is a level-up virtual content video by Oreo that takes the viewers into its chocolaty world.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ENau7AkayN8\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The main advantage of this video is that there will be many repeat viewers. They\u2019ll keep on coming back just to explore things they might\u2019ve missed the first time.This sort of repeated exposure to a brand and the thrill-factor involved will give returns like never before.<\/p>\n<div class=\"seperate\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Use VR to give your customers an experience they\u2019ll never forget!<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.animaker.com\/blog11-vr-marketing-campaigns-that-prove-you-are-already-late\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Big brands have already seen huge returns and greater fandom<\/a>.
